A unique W116 that has been completely restored by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre in Stuttgart.
The restoration was commissioned by the then owner, a Dr Woo of Hong Kong, and the car shipped to Germany in 2000. The car was rebuilt from a bare shell, of course only using genuine MB parts. Every aspect of the car was either replaced or refurbished; a process took three years and a photographic record was kept detailing each stage. In 2003 the 450 was shipped back to Hong Kong.
Fast forward to 2013 and the car was imported into the UK. Between 2013-15 it was on display at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands.
The car has featured in a couple of magazines both here and Hong Kong; issues of which come with the car.
Confirming the restoration’s provenance is a certificate from Mercedes, along with the album chronicling the rebuild along with a file of paperwork.
The body is finished in Anthracite and the interior has been completely trimmed in black leather, even the dashboard and door cards have been beautifully leather covered, contrasting perfectly with the immaculate Zebrano woodwork.
Factory fitted air conditioning that is refreshingly cold.
Although it is nearly 20 years since the restoration, the car has lived a cossetted life, and covered just over 20k miles. It remains in simply exceptional condition outside, inside and underneath.
Today it would be nigh on impossible to carry out a restoration of this depth on a W116 as many parts that were replaced with new are not available any more.
For Dr Woo the undoubtedly considerable cost must have been a price worth paying to have a new W116 450SEL. Today it remains one of the best of its kind.
