Sold as the E500 in the UK, but as the 550 in Japan and the USA, the facelift 8-cylinder W211 E-Class received a significant power hike over the pre-facelift car, gaining 80bhp with the new 5.5-litre engine taking power to 382bhp and 391lb/ft of torque.

Unfortunately in the UK conservative buyers predominantly bought smaller engine E-Classes, making facelift E500s very rare in this country. This is a shame because these are stonking cars; smooth, quiet and refined, riding on Airmatic suspension, yet with tremendous performance.

 

This car has just been imported from Japan. Unlike the UK, servicing is mandatory as part of the strict Shaken roadworthiness test and road salt is not used. Together with the better climate and often low usage of personal cars, results in car like this being in far better condition than UK equivalents, particularly underneath, where cars like this appear to be in near new condition.
